The C.U.B.

Malthouse shares a courtyard with Chunky Move and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, and the combined complex goes by the name of Ngargee, gathering for celebration , in the language of the local Bunurong Indigenous people and guardians. The CUB malthouse was redeveloped to become the new home for the Playbox Theatre Company as the theatre s original home had been destroyed by fire. Under artistic director Michael Kantor, executive producer Stephen Armstrong and associate producer/business manager Catherine Jones, the company is a leading force in Australia’s performing arts culture. Malthouse Theatre produces and presents up to twenty productions annually, from Australia and abroad, a multidisciplinary contemporary theatre where the combined possibilities of all the theatre arts are offered centre-stage. Originally built in 1892 as a brewery and malting works, The C.U.B Malthouse was generously donated by Carlton and United Breweries for the creation and presentation of contemporary Australian theatre in 1990.
